Buying a home is an exciting endeavor, but there is a fair amount of vocabulary that you may not be familiar with. How many times have you driven down a neighborhood and pointed to a house that you liked but didn’t know what the style was called? Wonder no more! Here is an overview of the most popular styles of homes, like the Stick-Eastlake style, which you can probably recognize by its wrap around porch and decorative trim.

Stick-Eastlake (1860-1890)

Although this style is technically victorian, it first popped up in Fort Dearborn, Illinois, which was later renamed Chicago. The siding was done in wood and decorated with extra planks going diagonal or horizontal over the exterior. Steep gable roofs, with complex intersections, added to the style of this home, as well did the complicated trim. Small decorative windows were added near the roof, and some had dormers. The most identifying feature was the wrap around porch making this home feel complete in it’s elaborate and fanciful look.
