Are you traveling this holiday? Leaving an empty house for a while can lead to a bit of anxiety. From home security, to the general well-being of the house, there can be a lot to think about. Here are a few tips for keeping your home in shape while you are gone this holiday season!
Be aware of power cuts
When heading on holiday, leave a coin on top of a frozen cup of water in your freezer.
If the power in your property fails while you are away, then the coin will fall through the water.
If so, some of the food in your freezer is unlikely to be edible.
Keeping your plants watered
If you don’t have a friendly neighbour to help with watering your pot plants, this might be your solution.
Find an empty long-necked bottle – a wine bottle is ideal – and fill it with water, then upend it firmly into the plant pot soil.
The water will release very slowly, which will ensure your plants stay watered.

Keep your property smelling sweet
Sprinkle some cinnamon powder on a rug or carpet the day before you go away and then do your vacuuming.
The spice will have your rooms smelling sweetly and combat the smell of mustiness that sometimes sinks into unused properties.
Make it look like someone’s at home
If you have a friendly neighbour, ask if they can pop over and hang some washing on the line.
This will help to show any potential burglars that someone is at home.
Similarly, ask your next-door neighbour if they mind parking in your driveway while you’re away.
Avoid food waste
In the week leading up to your holiday, use a meal delivery service that provides the exact amount of groceries needed.
That way, you won’t end up with any unwanted fresh food in your fridge.
