It is cold outside, and it’s going to get colder! Is your home prepared for the next winter storm? With more snow and ice expected it could be dangerous for you and around your home. Some simple tips, like keeping your faucet on a slow drip to keep from freezing in your pipes can prevent expensive damage, but what about when you know you are going to be stuck in your home for a while? Here are a few tips to help you get through this next winter storm in your home.

Before the Storm

If possible, it’s best to prepare before your garage door is iced shut. Make sure to get essential groceries and prepare an emergency kit: drinking water, non-perishable food, a weather radio, flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit. has a great list of recommended supplies. Make sure you’ve got your shovels ready, along with sand and/or rock salt for traction. We also recommend making sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home.

Get everything ready so you don’t have to go anywhere. If you do, stock up on emergency items for your vehicle, too. You can get most supplies at your local hardware store, and be sure to get some traction cleats to put over your snow boots in case of ice. And for the love of Fluffy and Fido, please bring your pets inside.

During the Storm

First, stay inside. Snuggle up in a warm blanket with a good book, some fun family board games, or a deck of cards to play Solitaire. (It’s best to save the battery life of your smart phone in case of a power outage, so go old school for your games.) Winter is a good time to complete a puzzle, too.

After the Storm

When you need to dig out, be sure you’re dressed appropriately — change wet clothing frequently and minimize exposed skin. Mittens offer the best warmth, as do warm layers and a hat. Be sure to take breaks shoveling to avoid overexertion. Try making a couple passes during the storm to keep your lifting load lighter. Drink warm liquids (hot cocoa, anyone?) when you come inside to bring up your body temperature.

Stay safe out there folks!
