As cooler temps slowly edge out Portland’s current short sleeve climate, many homeowner’s attentions turn to protecting their houses from the inclement weather. Oregon’s cold season can be unpredictable. We may see heavy snows that last for weeks, or we may skate through winter with nary a slight dusting of snowflakes that melt on impact. Regardless of how our winter takes shape, we can count on one thing—lots and lots of rain.
Protecting the features of your home that may sustain damage from this oncoming deluge of atmospheric dampness is a priority as we ease into fall. Decks and other wooden outdoor structures are at risk of all manner of weather-induced damage. Protecting those structures before the rain gets the better of them is vital. These few tips will help you on your way to total rain readiness.
ADD WATER REPELLENT TO YOUR DECKS
You may want to consider refinishing your wooden decks and porches with a water repellent especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Any area of your wooden deck that is not finished and coated with a water repellent will likely become damaged over the course of winter. For a quick test, pour a glass of water onto your deck. If the water soaks into the deck rather than beading it probably needs to be sealed. Most decks need to be resealed every year or two.
REMOVE SNOW IMMEDIATELY
Remove snow before it can cause any big issues. Using a large push broom and pushing along the grain of the wood will prevent and scarring of the wood, like you may see with a shovel. Keeping mounds of snow off your deck before ice overtakes them means easier maintenance as the weather gets more intense.
INSPECT YOUR DECK FOR DAMAGE
Keep your eyes peeled for weather damage as the season wears on. A simple inspection after a particularly memorable storm can prevent larger issues from taking hold.
Now that you’re weather prepared, it’s time to enjoy the last of the sunshine!
